Random Quotes from a Bygone Era

as used in the original pre-Supplemental Manual

Introduction to the Listing of Quotes

The first version of the manual (that was later to be transformed into what is today known as the Supplemental Manual) had a narrow column of ancillary text along the outer margin of each page. The purpose of this special but narrow column of  text was to accompany and enhance the main body of subject text, and it contained an assortment of quotes that were specific to the page's text, with each chapter having a different set of quotes specialized to the topic of that particular chapter. As the size and scope of the emerging manual exploded it soon became clear that the book text was expanding much, much faster than I was able to find appropriate quotes by which to fill the margin of new pages. Moreover, fitting in new quotes, so that they corresponded with textual content and then having the quoted text flow correctly onto all of the following pages soon became an excruciatingly tedious and laborious chore. Consequently, the noble idea of accompanying the main text with pertinent quotes was dropped entirely.

However, remarkably, whether it be good or bad, and considering that I have a penchant to get rid of whatever it is I no longer need, the old text files containing the quotes survived many computer hard drive cleaning episodes and computer crashes dating onward from about 1993 to this present day. Because many of the quotes have awareness merit they are being made available here, separated into groups using the original chapter designations arranged alphabetically but more or less as they appeared in the original (work in progress) book. However, please note that some of the early book chapters and/or the abbreviations I used (and that are mentioned below) only existed for a very short period of time and do not exist in the current Supplemental Manual. These original chapter names were changed early on and/or were melded into other chapters, with the newly resulting chapter then greatly enhanced and often bearing little resemblance to what had preceded it. Such rapid (and unrecorded) evolution makes relating some of the original chapters to the present Supplemental Manual difficult. Nonetheless, trying to relate them to the present book is unnecessary, because the value of the quotes stand on their own whether, or not, they can be cross-referenced to book pages that no longer exists.

The majority of the quotes listed below were brought to my attention by Annette Harrison, who had been an avid student of various Hindu and Yogic traditions and some of the Gurus who espoused and practiced them, as well various contemporary writings on the subject of spirituality. Occasionally some of these writings seemed to have at least some bit of relevancy in regards to the awareness work processes we enjoyed during the early 1990s. Annette later helped to edit what eventually morphed into the Supplemental Manual and was instrumental in formulating its layout as a teaching manual. It should also be pointed out, however, that the quotes do not represent sources that were studied in order to further our little group's awareness progress or goals, but, rather, the quotes were more of an after thought hopefully to give support and credence to what we had already independently discovered. In the early days of this awareness work we were unsure of ourselves and sought out independent sources that might provide some sort of backup support for our emerging ideas and concepts. This was primarily because what we were discovering departed so radically from the usual, mainstream thinking and reasoning that had made up the core thinking and behavior regulating our lives only a year or so earlier. Also, keep in mind that the selected quotes were seen through our eyes, perceived in ways customary to the awareness work we were doing. Consequently, most or all of the independently derived quotes may have no originally intended similarity to this work whatsoever.

Some of the quotes may seem outdated, or some readers may have no idea who the person being quoted is or was, or why their words might be useful. You might even find some typographic errors in the quotes. However, none of this is important. All that matters is if you, the reader, get the message lying behind each and every quote. If you want to quibble over syntax or something else that ultimately does not matter then any further attempt to read this material is pointless.

Go all out to conduct High Power. Do not take half measures. Do Not hesitate to ask boldly for far more. Who asks a king for a penny?

Vernon Howard

There is a basic consciousness underlying everything that is neither magnetic nor electric, but a combination of sorts. It is a basic law, but it is not a law, it is just the way this underlying consciousness has decided to behave. So this basic law underlying everything is just conscious choice of how energy wants to interact, period.

Terry Hathaway

Twist and become whole. Bend and become straight. Empty out and become full. Expend energy and be renewed.

TAO 22

When you are on a track you know where you are going, what is happening. Everything is just a repetition. Who will plan? If mind plans, mind is always of the past. Life cannot be planned, because
through planning, you are committing suicide. What is your fear? Why plan it? The fear comes because you are not certain of whether you will be there or not.

Rajneesh

Apprehensions are greater in proportion as things are unknown.

Livy

The human mind can raise the sail in order to begin the voyage, but, having done that it can only rest and let the winds of reality carry it to port. Now ... we need both spiritual awareness and human thought. The mind, which consists of memorized data, is useful for remembering how to tend the garden, or figure finances, or greet someone in the morning. But awareness is far above mechanical memory, it is Reality itself.

Vernon Howard

Agreement (Quotes Group 2)

There is nothing so powerful as truth--and often nothing so strange.

Daniel Webster

Faced with the choice between changing one's mind and proving there is no need to do so, almost everyone gets busy on the proof.

John Kenneth Galbraith

Suffering is nothing more than an attempt by nature to help us face illusions we don't even suspect we harbor. Suffering has no power over anyone. Just perceive this: It is a message telling you you are out of harmony.

Vernon Howard

Remember, if you condemn yourself you will condemn everybody.... And a person who condemns himself cannot love.

Anonymous

The Holy Spirit's temple is not a body, but a relationship.

A Course In Miracles

It is only in the critical situation of emotional and spiritual suffering--which is the situation that leads them to seek therapeutic help--that people will endure the pain and anxiety of uncovering the profound roots of their problems.

Rollo May

We can work with ourselves ... but we should also avail ourselves of aid.... This takes more heroism than might be suspected; for the mystic will not tell us what we prefer to hear, but what we need to receive.

Vernon Howard

He who desires but acts not, breeds pestilence.

William Blake

You can be happy, but not if you place happiness first. Happiness follows a sincere effort at self-discovery, like the roof goes on the house last.

Vernon Howard.

Explanation (Quotes Group 3)

The intellect raises the question, but fails to give it a satisfactory solution. This is the nature of the intellect. The function of the intellect consists in leading the mind to a higher field of consciousness by proposing all sorts of questions which are beyond itself. The mystery is solved by living it, by seeing into its working, by actually experiencing the significance of life....

Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki
Zen Master

I don't fully understand how the intuition functions in such an amazing way, but I definitely know, through direct experience ... that it does. And I find that the more I trust and follow this inner "voice," the easier, fuller, and more exciting my life becomes.

Shakti Gawain

There is no way this Heart can escape you. Oh, Love, You may as well take it. If the pain of Love doesn't fill this Heart, I don't care if I have it or not.

Rumi

Eyes of Perfection (Quotes Group 4)

The greatest politeness is free of all formality. Perfect conduct is free of concern. Perfect wisdom is unplanned. Perfect Love is without demonstrations. Perfect sincerity offers no guarantee.

Chuang Tsu

If there is love, then there is no need for an explanation, the other will understand. Love always understands. So there is no higher morality than love, there cannot be. Love is the highest law.

Rajneesh

We must stop associating change with loss. Notice how you fear that change will take things away from you?

Vernon Howard

It is the Will's role, in an undenied state, to feel the situation for us and tell us whether we are willing to risk having the experience or not.

Earth Spell

Suffering is not an enemy, but a guide to correction.

Vernon Howard

Denial is every place you are not fully conscious. If you have denial you have guilt because you are not allowing your true vibration. If you have no guilt, you are no longer bound by the physical plane. You can leave it without dying first and without leaving your body behind. Instead, you can speed up the vibration of your physical body to the speed of light.

Earth Spell

We can increase the power of our creativity by recognizing it with gratitude.

Anonymous

It is only in the critical situation of emotional and spiritual suffering--which is the situation that leads them to seek therapeutic help--that people will endure the pain and anxiety of uncovering the profound roots of their problems.

Rollo May

When restlessness and attraction to the call overcome fear of the unknown, we cross the threshold of adventure--leaving the comfort of the familiar for the challenge of the unknown.

Anonymous

These are feelings of joy that do not have to deny anything in order to be joyful, feelings of joy that have no undercurrent feelings of only being an intermission in an ongoing war and joy that need not hold back because of what tomorrow may bring. To have these feelings, you must be free of all denials.

Earth Spell

Remember, if you condemn yourself you will condemn everybody.... And a person who condemns himself cannot love.

Anonymous

To work at living is as useless as rolling a ball downhill.

Vernon Howard

You cannot go past emotions and find healing. For example, if you tell yourself you should not be angry at someone because you already know it is not their fault, you cannot move the blaming rage you feel and have been holding back for so long.

Earth Spell

Fragmentation (Quotes Group 5)

Have you observed yourself? You are always trying to exhibit your wisdom, always in search of a victim to whom you can show your knowledge, just searching, hurting for somebody weaker than you--then you will jump in and you will show your wisdom.

Rajneesh

By expressing from the Will, you are vibrating yourself so that you are making space for your own essence and reclaiming essence you have lost to guilt by making a place for it within yourself.

Earth Spell

The truth will not start the walk for you, but it will match every step you take toward it with a step of its own toward you.

Vernon Howard

... denial wants to draw something to itself that will release it. The intensity needed to trigger you will exactly equal the intensity of your denial.

Right Use Of Will

All that is great, all that is beautiful, all that is true and real, is always spontaneous. You cannot plan it. The moment you plan it, everything goes wrong. The moment planning enters, everything becomes unreal.

Rajneesh

He who rules men lives in confusion; he who is ruled by men lives in sorrow.

Chuang Tsu

If you are a man moving into this part of your lost Will, it is not going to be helpful to your healing to cling to images of what sort of emotional expression it would be suitable for a man to allow himself in these releases ... you have been shamed into thinking and believing that the emotional expression you need here is not manly, not acceptable, and is, instead, either feminine, hysterical and weak or sniveling and cowardly.

Earth Spell

Go all out to contact Higher Power. Do not take half measures. Do not hesitate to ask boldly for far more. Who asks a king for a penny?

Right Use Of Will

The fully grown person is not a person at all. The moment you are fully grown you become a presence, not a person--the person disappears.... The word "person" comes from "persona," mask--it is just a face that you have put on yourself to show others.

Rajneesh

The decision to let go our grievances against other people is the decision to see ourselves as we truly are, because any darkness we let blind us to another's perfection also blinds us to our own.

Marianne Williamson

When you meet anyone, remember it is a holy encounter. As you see him, you will see yourself. As you think of him, you will think of yourself. As you treat him, you will treat yourself. Never forget this, for in him you will find yourself or lose yourself.

A Course In Miracles

Introduction to a New Paradigm (Quotes Group 6)

Awareness is observation without condemnation. Awareness brings understanding, because there is no condemnation or identification but silent observation. If I want to understand something ... I must not pursue it as pleasure or avoid it as non-pleasure. There must merely be silent observation of a fact. There is no end in view but awareness of everything as it arises.

Krishnamurti

Life is awareness, awareness is life.

Deepak Chopra

You cannot relate to something in which you did not participate.

David Harrison

We will always learn what we have chosen to teach.

Marianne Williamson

If something's not working, do something about it. If that doesn't work, do something else. Persist with another course of action until eventually you solve your problem. Eliminate sameness and welcome change in your life.

Anonymous

Fear is always having your attention upon someone else, even if it is in a good way, because you are then really saying that they are the power in your experience. You believe that they have the power to give you your good, to withhold it, or to take it away. Whenever your attention is outside of your Self, there is fear. This is so because you are no longer free to live out your true identity.

Tom Johnson

I will work in my own way, according to the light that is in me.

Lydia Maria Child

Man has a pretty static picture of the world, accidentally or forcibly imprinted upon him by means of chains of conditioned associations. Man believes his imprint board is reality.

Timothy Leary

Mindmares 1 & 2 (Quotes Group 7a)

The world of the human storyline, of all our concentration on behavior and all the things that occur outside us, is a world of illusion. It's a veil in front of a more real world, a collective dream.... A miracle is our awakening from it.

Marianne Williamson

Every behavior is useful in some context.

NLP

To be actively hated is almost as good as to be actively liked; it breaks down the utterly unbearable situation of anonymity and aloneness.

Rollo May

Our human body is a finely tuned instrument. It tells us at all times just how aligned we are with our purpose and with the Universe. When we notice discomfort in our bodies, it is helpful to look for ways we are withholding love, and express it. Learn to read your body consistently, for it reveals the state of your consciousness.

Patent & Beasley

Only the man who can relax is able to create, and ideas reach his mind like lightning.

Cicero

Whenever you say, I will think it over; you have started doubting. Doubt thinks, not you. And when there is no doubt, faith acts, not you. ... Through doubt you can penetrate the mysteries of time; through faith you will enter the door of eternity.

Rajneesh

Fritz Perls

Maharajji said of people who had bad habits, such as smoking, drinking or even eating fish, eggs, or meat, "They have their habits. They enjoy them. Why should I stop them?"

Ram Dass

Surrender means, by definition, giving up attachments to results. When we surrender to God, we let go of our attachment to how things happen on the outside and we become more concerned with what happens on the inside.

Marianne Williamson

Mind never doubts itself, that is the problem. It doubts everybody--it will doubt even a Buddha.... Once the mind starts doubting itself it is already going out of existence.... Once you start doubting the mind, sooner or later you will fall into the abyss of meditation.

Rajneesh

Let knowledge grow from more to more, But more of reverence in us dwell; That mind and soul, according well, May make one music as before.

The failure of the Will is the central pathology of our day.... Our time should be called the "age of the disordered Will."

Leslie Faber

Love is not a matter of what you say and do; it is a matter of how it feels when you say and do it.

Earth Spell

Sometimes people think calling on God means inviting a force into our lives that will make everything rosy. The truth is, it means inviting everything into our lives that will make us grow--and growth can be messy. The purpose of life is to grow into our perfection. Once we call on God, everything that could anger us is on the way. Why? Because the place where we go into anger instead of love, is our wall.

Marianne Williamson

Whenever you say "I love you" to a person, the love is lost. The love has already gone because the lover has come in. How can love exist when division has come in? ... In love there are no individuals. Love is a melting, a merging, they are not two. Love exists, not the lovers, but the mind comes in and says "I am in love, I love you." When "I" comes, doubt enters; division comes in and love is then no more.

Rajneesh

The false self, being false, cannot be changed, but it can be dissolved.

Vernon Howard

All worry springs from false notions about ourselves. The only way to find freedom from it is to give up the false self and live from your authentic nature.

Vernon Howard

Of what use to make heroic vows of amendment, if the same old lawbreaker is to keep them?

Emerson

Only self-action can change the negative course of our lives.

Anonymous

Without Will, the Spirit has no selection process. The Will polarity is your individual magnetic energy field and draws the experiences you are going to have. So, if you hold something in your Will which is not allowed free movement or a free expression, but which is denied, you will then draw a reflection of this to yourself. Even if denied, it is still there in your magnetic energy field, disconnected from your conscious awareness. In triggering yourself and releasing denial from your own energy field, you will no longer need to draw to yourself any unpleasantness.

Right Use of Will

He who desires but acts not, breeds pestilence.

William Blake

If you're judging a brother, you're wrong even if you're right.... Our perception of someone's guilt only keeps them stuck in it.... Treating someone with compassion and forgiveness is much more likely to elicit a healed response.... Most of us are aware on some level when we're off. We'd be doing thing differently if we knew how.

Marianne Williamson

By accepting ourselves as we are, we accept that our current state is only one of the possible means--whereby, the need is fixed, the means are free choice. The need causes unfinished situations to come to the surface. No need to dig.

Fritz Perls

A saint's heart melts like butter. No. It melts even more than butter. Butter only melts when you put it near the fire, but a saint's heart melts when anyone else's heart comes near the fire.

Maharajji quoting Kabir

I'd become very smart about my neuroses, but that didn't exorcise them. The garbage didn't go away; it just became more sophisticated.

Marianne Williamson

I have found in my own work with people that during periods of acute psychological pressure, walking was an activity to which they naturally turned ... the agitation of the whirling motion of the mind is placed into an organic rhythm by walking and this organic rhythm takes on symbolic significance as one places one foot after the other....

James Hillman

For many years before I met Maharajji I was searching, going here and there, studying this and that. I began following strict yogic codes. It was during a period when I had given up coffee and tea that
I met Maharajji. Tea was being offered to all of us, and I didn't know what to do. I said nothing but did not accept a cup of tea. and Maharajji leaned over to me saying, "Won't you take tea?" So I drank the tea. With that one cup of tea, all those strict disciplines and schedules were washed away! They seemed meaningless and unnecessary; the true work seemed beyond these things. Now I do whatever comes of itself.

From stories about
Neem Karoli Baba
Collected by Ram Dass

He (Jesus) saw that, in spite of the ritualistic forms and dogmas that had been imposed by man, religion had but one source and that was good within.... Then he threw all forms to the winds, as it were, and went directly to God, went straight to the heart of his loving attainment. He soon found that this did not take long years of weary plodding through dogmas, creeds, formulas and initiations which the priesthood were foisting upon the people in order to hold them in ignorance and, therefore, in subjection.

Baird T. Spalding

We can become emotionally paralyzed from life's problems. We feel powerless to do anything about them. We don't know which direction to move and we have become too immobile to move anyway.

Fritz Perls

If you straddle the fence too long you get a sore crotch.

Barbara Ridgeway

If you are true, but not in the same truth with me, cleave to your companions; I will seek my own. I do this not selfishly, but humbly and truly. However long we have dwelt in lies, now your interest, mine and all men's, is to live in truth. Does this sound too harsh today? You will soon love what is dictated by your nature as well as mine, and, if we follow the truth, it will bring us out safe at last.

R.W. Emerson

Violence is the ultimate destructive substitute which surges in to fill the vacuum where there is no relatedness.

Rollo May

If a man is crossing a river and an empty boat collides with his own skiff, even though he be a bad-tempered man, he will not become very angry. But if he sees a man in the boat he will shout to him to steer clear.

Chuang Tsu

If people go on colliding with you and if people go on being angry with you, remember, they are not at fault. Your boat is not empty. They are angry because you are there. If the boat is empty they will look foolish, if they are angry they will look foolish.

Rajneesh

I realized many years ago, that I must be very powerful if I could mess up everything I touched, everywhere I went, with such amazing consistency.

Marianne Williamson

Everyone is a reflection of my face.

Maharajji/Ram Dass

The only obstacle to releasing joy is unwillingness to feel love for ourselves and others. Every experience is an opportunity to feel this love and to connect with the essence of another.

Patent & Beasley

Happy the man who has been able to learn the cause of things, and has put under foot all fear and inexorable fate, and the noise of greedy hell.

Virgil

The consciousness of the people you surround yourself with is the consciousness you get to live with.

If you can relax into normalcy, into ordinariness, suddenly you will burst forth into an extraordinary radiance.

Rajneesh

It isn't the absence of other people in our lives that causes us the pain, but rather what we do with them when they're there.

Marianne Williamson

And you are so much, so stubbornly much, you are so filled with yourself, that nothing can penetrate you. Your doors are closed. When you disappear, when you are not, the doors open. Then you become just like the vast open sky. And that is your nature. That is Tao.

Rajneesh

The child [being born] feels immense pain. The pain is such that he becomes unconscious. That is a built-in mechanism in the mind--whenever something becomes unbearable, the mind simply turns you off so that you need not feel it.... So you have never known unbearable pain.

Rajneesh

Total truth is necessary. You must live by what you say.

Maharajji

A special relationship is a kind of union from which union is excluded.

A Course In Miracles

This is the true body which Humanity has always had and which all have today. Such a body always has existed and always will exist. It is a body so luminous that no germ of old age, of decay can find lodgement therein. It is a body so alive that it cannot die.

A Course In Miracles

This is the fear, the anguish of man. If love is not possible then he is alone. Hence love has to be made possible, it has to be created--even if it is pseudo, it has to be created. One has to go on loving, because otherwise it will be impossible to live.

Rajneesh

The revolution we call mind-body medicine was based on this simple discovery: wherever thought goes, a chemical goes with it.

Chopra Deepak

Whenever we are contemplating attacking someone, it is as though we are holding a sword above their head. The sword, however, doesn't fall on them but on us. Since all thought is thought about ourselves, then to condemn another is to condemn ourselves.

Marianne Williamson

Our feelings of scarcity become chronic.... Confronted with decisions, we fear the wrong turn will bring disaster, cutting us off even further from any possibility of care and abundance....

But if we begin to let go of fear we come to see that regardless of which path we choose, either one may lead us to abundance, to God. Whatever we choose, ... there will be some doorway, some opportunity, some person or situation that may bring us what we need.

Anonymous

You can be happy, but not if you place happiness first. Happiness follows a sincere effort at self-discovery, like the roof goes on the house last.

Vernon Howard

If you are relaxed, you will suddenly see other people look a lot more relaxed. If you are silent, the whole world falls into a deep silence.... When love starts overflowing you--not the love you know but the love that Buddhas know--when love starts flowing then you suddenly see it is flowing all over the place. It is flowing from the trees--you call it fragrance, it is love. It is radiating from the sun--you call it light, it is love.

Rajneesh

The Creation exists because it has both the Spiritual Essence which powers it and the Magnetic Polarity which opens the space to receive it. The same is true within each individual.

Right Use Of Will

To think oneself a rooster is madness. To think oneself a human being is greater madness, because you don't belong to any form. Whether the form is that of a rooster or of a human being is irrelevant--you belong to the formless, you belong to the total, the whole.

Rajneesh

Relationships are assignments. They are part of a vast plan for our enlightenment.... Relationships are the Holy Spirit's laboratories in which He brings together people who have the maximal opportunity for mutual growth.

Rajneesh

Sexual intercourse is the human counterpart of the cosmic process.

Ancient Chinese Proverb

When inward life dries up, when feelings decrease and apathy increases, when one cannot effect or even genuinely touch another person, violence flares up as a daimonic necessity for contact, a mad drive forcing touch in the most direct way possible. ... To inflict pain and torture at least proves that one can affect somebody. ... The mood of the anonymous person is, if I cannot affect or touch anybody, I can at least shock you into some feeling, force you into some passion through wounds and pain. I shall at least make sure we both feel something, and I shall force you to see me and know that I also am here!

Rollo May

You have surrounded us so long in mystery, it is no wonder that doubt and disbelief have become dominant. The more you build images and idols and surround us with death and make us unapproachable, save through someone other than ourselves, the deeper the doubt and shadow will be cast and the chasm of superstition will grow wider and more difficult to cross. If you would boldly shake our hands and say "I know you," then all could see and know us as we are.

Baird T. Spalding

Every child is born overflowing. Then we have to cut the energy source, we have to prune the child from here and there so that he becomes controllable. And the basis of all control is to divide the child in two. Then you need not bother, he himself will do the controlling.... Now he knows what is wrong, now he knows what part of his being is wrong and his head becomes the controller.

TAO 76

This trip is based on just two very simple concepts. Total honesty with yourself, total honesty. If you make a mistake, admit it and get on with it. Don't cover your errors. The whole spiritual journey is a continuous falling on your face. And you get up and brush yourself off, and you get on with it. If you were perfect you wouldn't even go on a journey. Don't be afraid of making errors. You may choose the wrong teacher, you may get into a method that's no good. Many things can happen. Make an error, correct it if you can, without hurting another being's spiritual opportunities.

Living is a completely different thing from just existing. Too many people merely exist because they do not recognize the Grandeur, the Greatness, the Infinite Potential, that is within. To really live, there must be the full release of the Whole Self, of that Self that you really are. Your True Self is not what someone else wants you to be, and it is not a duplicate of what someone else is. Each person has a special purpose, that which is unique and therefore cannot be a duplication of someone else.

Tom Johnson

The whole of life has become false, root and all, and how you exist in it is a sheer miracle. Talking with a false face, talking to a false face, happiness is false, misery false. And then you hope to find the truth! With false faces the truth can never be found. One has to find his own true face and drop all the false masks.

TAO 48

In discriminative awareness, the intellect is used only in the early stages. Later, there is no-mind. The intellect is available as a servant, but not as a master. It is available to do analytic work when you need it.... It's a power, a siddhi, that you have because of your simian nature. Apes have it too. So, too, your cerebral cortex is a power, because of your homo sapien nature.... Though we worship the human intellect, as an exquisite power, it is very trivial in the greater design of the natural law of things.

Freedom, liberation, this must be the aim of man. To become free, to be liberated from slavery: this is what a man ought to strive for when he becomes even a little conscious of his position.
